Background: Jailing from Knoxville, Tennessee, Sawyer is a con artist whose real name is James Ford. Sawyer has taken to calling himself Sawyer, using the name of the con artist who destroyed his own family as an alias
When James was a small child, his mother had an affair with the real Sawyer. The real Sawyer was after the life savings of the Ford family, and after he conned Mrs. Ford out of the money, James’s father killed his mother and then himself. James had been hiding under the bed in the room where the murder-suicide took place during the tragic turn of events. James dropped out of high school sometime during his freshman year and vowed that one day he would avenge the destruction of his family. Using the moniker of Sawyer, he became like the man he vowed to kill, using his charm and looks to con women out of their family’s money.
Sawyer managed to con many women during his day, but one of these cons still weighs heavily on his mind. He had marked a woman named Cassidy for the long con, and along the way he fell in love with her. They were together for several months, performing small cons themselves, which was all part of Sawyer’s set up. His partner Gordy insisted that Sawyer go through with the long con, and Sawyer complies, though it was clear after the long con had been pulled that he was angry with himself for having done it.
Some time later Sawyer was informed that the real Sawyer was in Australia, and so James went there with the express purpose to kill him. After killing the real ‘Sawyer,’ James discovered the man wasn’t the real Sawyer at all. After this, Sawyer got into a bar fight, head-butting an Australian official and getting himself deported. He was to be sent home on Oceanic Flight 815, which crashed on a strange island over 1,000 miles off course of the intended flight path.
On the island, Sawyer definitely had more enemies than friends, particularly at the point from which he comes to the island (which will be at the conclusion of the Season 2 finale). He collected and hoarded items on the island, insulted his fellow island inhabitants, purposely provoked his fellow islanders to become hostile against him, and seemed to have something of a deathwish. He’s got a scar on his shoulder from when he’d gotten shot off Michael’s raft at the conclusion of Season 1, as well as a few other scars and bruises here and there.
Personality: Sawyer is a complex man. He’s a con man first and foremost, and so it’s hard to say if he ever truly allows anyone to see his real self. He can be extremely charming and convincing one minute, and full of rage the next. Suffice it to say, he has mood swings. Sawyer is an intensely private person; he rarely shares information about his personal life with anyone because he has so many issues with how his life has played out. Often sarcastic, he takes to insulting others because he doesn’t want them to get too close to him; he pushes them away by belittling them. Sawyer also has something of an inferiority complex, and that helps to explain his antisocial behavior.
Appearance: Sawyer is in his mid-thirties and quite a looker. Well, he would be were he not disheveled due to being on an island for sixty-seven days in survival mode. He cleans up quite nicely but has looked rather grungy for the past nine weeks. His dirty blond hair is getting on the long side, often hanging in his face. Sawyer could definitely use a shave -- right now it's stubble city. He's got piercing blue eyes that can either appear cold or intense, depending on his mood. With a killer smile accented by dimples, he's a pretty hard guy to resist -- especially when he turns the charm on.
